Although CloudM Automate has no native analytics or tracking feature, you can still measure how much website traffic your email signatures drive. You do this by adding UTM parameters, short tags on the end of a web address that tell your analytics tool (such as Google Analytics) where a visit came from. CloudM keeps the parameters when you save, and your analytics tool records the visits. CloudM doesn't collect or report this data itself.
What you need
- Analytics on the website the link points to. UTMs only record visits to sites you track, so there's no benefit in adding them to links to social media or third-party sites.
-
Links that start with
https://. See The Signature Source Code Handbook for the link rules.
Add UTM parameters to a link
Add a ? to the end of the address, followed by your parameters separated by &:
<a href="https://www.example.com/?utm_source=email-signature&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=q4-2026">www.example.com</a>
This works with variables too. Here the link uses the user's home page, and the visible text stays clean:
#if($urlHome != "")<a href="${urlHome}?utm_source=email-signature&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=q4-2026">$!{urlHome}</a>#end
This assumes the variable's value starts with https:// and doesn't already contain a ?.
Use the same parameters on several links (optional)
Define them once with #set, then reuse them:
#set($utm = "utm_source=email-signature&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=q4-2026")
<a href="https://www.example.com/?${utm}">Website</a>
<a href="https://www.example.com/events?${utm}">Events</a>
Banners and images
The same applies to a clickable banner or logo. Put the UTM link on the <a> that wraps the image, and use a different utm_campaign value for each banner so you can see which one drives the clicks.
<a href="https://www.example.com/webinar?utm_source=email-signature&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=webinar-banner"><img src="https://www.example.com/images/banner.png" alt="Join our webinar" width="600" height="100"></a>
The image itself must be hosted at a public https:// address. We recommend hosting your images in your own Google Cloud Storage bucket: see Use an image hosted in GCP in your signature.
Choosing values
-
utm_source: where the click came from, for exampleemail-signature. -
utm_medium: the channel, for exampleemail. -
utm_campaign: what you're measuring, for example a promotion, banner, or time period. Use different values in different templates to compare them. - Use lowercase and hyphens, with no spaces.
Don't include names, email addresses, or other details that identify individuals. These end up in your analytics tool, and Google Analytics' terms prohibit personally identifiable information. Team or region values are fine, but only use a variable if its values never contain spaces or special characters.
See the results
In Google Analytics 4, go to Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition and filter by session source, medium, or campaign. Other analytics tools have equivalent reports.
Limitations
UTMs measure clicks that reach your website. They don't measure how often a signature is seen or how many emails are opened.
Test before rolling out
Save the template, reopen Tools > Source code to check the link is intact, then select Preview. Send yourself a test email and click the link. The UTM parameters should appear in the address bar.
