Message is too large and attachments cannot be removed

Platforms

  • Source: Any

  • Destination: Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 / Exchange

Problem

This error occurs when the total size of a mail item exceeds the maximum message size limits of the destination platform during migration. The total size includes all content: the email body, any HTML formatting, embedded inline images, and all attachments.

  • In Google Workspace, the limit is 50MB. If the total size of an email item is larger than this, it cannot be imported via the Gmail API. This includes cases where a large image is embedded directly within the message body, causing the overall size to exceed the limit.

  • In Microsoft, the default limit is also 50MB. Although this is customizable, if the message size is not adjusted to accommodate the email's total size, the migration will fail.

Solution

The solution depends on your destination platform.

For Microsoft Destinations

Since the message size is customizable in Exchange, you can adjust the limit in CloudM Migrate to allow for larger email items.

  1. In the CloudM Migrate platform, navigate to the Destination Platform Migration Settings.

  2. Edit the Max Message Size value to a size that your Exchange server will support.

Provided the destination Exchange server allows messages of this size, they can then be imported without error.

For Google Workspace Destinations

The 50MB message size limit in Google Workspace is a hard constraint enforced by the Gmail API. If a message's total size is larger than 50MB (including all attachments and embedded content), it is not possible to import it.

Important Note on Export Errors

If you see a similar error message during the export phase, it means the item's total size exceeds the maximum size limit of the source platform.

  • This is a limitation of the source platform's API and is not related to any settings within CloudM Migrate.

  • The migration will not be able to proceed for this specific item. It is not possible to export it.
