Migrating Microsoft Teams Planner

Microsoft Team Planner migrations are unsupported if Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is enabled on the Microsoft 365 tenant. Multi Factor Authentication must be disabled for the specified admin accounts when migrating Microsoft Teams.

Migrate Microsoft Teams Planner content

To migrate the Planner content, you are going to need to complete 2 migration passes between the two Microsoft 365 domains - the first to migrate the Microsoft Team, and the second to migrate the Planner content to the Microsoft Team. Please also refer to the Microsoft 365 to Microsoft 365 migration (self-hosted) guide.

Migration pass 1:

  1. On the Source Platform tab, select Advanced Settings and make sure that the Office 365 Groups > Migrate Teams Planner setting is set to Disabled.
  2. On the User tab, add the Teams that you want to migrate, and ensure that they are ticked. You will also need to place ticks in the Channels and Documents checkboxes for each Team.
  3. Also in the User tab, add all the users within the domain. User items don’t need to be selected for migration, but they must be included in the list along with the Teams. This is to make sure that information such as Assignees is migrated with the Plan.
  4. On the Config Settings tab, select Advanced Settings and make sure the Domain Replacement > Email setting is set to Enabled. This ensures that assigned tasks can be migrated.
  5. Still on the Config Settings tab, select Advanced Settings and make sure the Reporting > Record Document Mappings setting is set to Enabled. This ensures that task attachments can be migrated.
  6. Continue with the migration.

Migration pass 2:

  1. On the Source Platform tab, select Advanced Settings and make sure that the Office 365 Groups > Migrate Teams Planner setting is set to Enabled.
  2. On the User tab, add the Teams that you want to migrate, and ensure that they are ticked. This time, you will need to make sure that the Channels and Documents checkboxes are left unchecked for each Team.
