We recommend using the Web Application to interact with CloudM Migrate. It contains many improvements, enhancements and new features compared with the Desktop Application.
Additionally, please use a Google Chrome browser as you may experience issues using Internet Explorer.
CloudM Migrate comes with two user interfaces for configuring, running and monitoring migrations. These are:
- CloudM Migrate Web Application
- CloudM Migrate Desktop Application
CloudM Migrate Web Application
The Web Application is the recommended way to use CloudM Migrate. The interface runs in any modern browser (we recommend Google Chrome - do not use unsupported browsers such as Internet Explorer) and provides a rich, intuitive experience to configure, manage and run migrations with CloudM Migrate. When new features are added to CloudM Migrate, they are normally now made available only in the Web Application (core migration changes are available in both applications).
If you have configurations from the Desktop Application, you can easily import them into the Web Application. See the table below for the differences between the two applications.
CloudM Migrate Desktop Application
The CloudM Migrate Desktop Application is the legacy interface for configuring and running migrations. Most new features are not available within the desktop application and it provides basic functionality for configuring and running a single migration.
Feature Comparison
Feature | Web Application | Desktop Application | Comments |
---|---|---|---|
Configuration Editing |
Configuration editing and running a migration is possible in both Desktop and Web Applications. In the desktop application only one configuration can be loaded and interacted with at any one time. |
Core Migration Functionality |
The core migration functionality of CloudM Migrate is available in both applications. Any new features or fixes to core migration fidelity are available regardless of the interface used to administer CloudM Migrate. |
Completed Migration Report |
When a migration completes, CloudM Migrate builds migration reports. These reports are available in both applications. |
Multiple Domains |
In the Web Application of CloudM Migrate, multiple domains can be configured at the same time. This means you can have one instance of CloudM Migrate to manage multiple domains or customers. | |
Multiple Configurations |
Using the Desktop Application only configuration can be loaded and edited at any time. Using the Web Application, each project or domain can have multiple migration configurations. You can clone configurations, copy them, make batches of users based on other configurations and see the status of multiple configurations at the same time. | |
Multiple Concurrent Migrations |
You can run multiple migrations simultaneously using the Web Application. This means you can run multiple batches or users within the same interface, or you can even run migrations for multiple domains simultaneously. Combining this functionality with the migration scheduling features provides a powerful and flexible platform for running multiple migrations. We use these features internally to manage and run many migrations for many customers simultaneously, saving large amounts of time and increasing the productivity of our migration engineers. | |
Multi-Server Migrations |
The ability to scale out CloudM Migrate to run across multiple servers is available in both applications. |
Environment Scan |
Environment scan is available only within the Web Application. This powerful features allows CloudM Migrate to scan your source environment and provide detail reporting on the data contained within it, even taking into account CloudM Migrate settings when the scans are performed. This lets you make informed choices about how to proceed with a migration, based on the distribution and amount of data within a domain. Currently, file environment scan is available and email environment scan is coming soon. | |
Scheduled Notifications |
The Web Applications allows you to configure notifications that can be sent at various points within a migration, or when certain events occur (such as a user failing to migrate). | |
Audit Log |
All actions, carried out by your migration engineers are logged within the Web Application to allow all migration activities to be seen. | |
Enhanced UI Notifications |
The Web Application contains enhanced UI notification elements to alert you about important events within a migration such as users failing. | |
Detailed Statistics Reporting |
Detailed statistical reporting about the overall volume and breakdown of migrated items is available only in the Web Application. The Desktop Application provides statistical information about the items migrated within the scope of the current migration, but the Web Application contains this and also information about the overall volume and breakdown of all items ever migrated for a domain. | |
Migration Estimation |
Combined with the statistical reporting, migration estimation is available within the Web Application. Using the overall performance of your migration and the amount of data within the source system, CloudM Migrate provides a live estimate of the expected time to complete the migration. This is performed using sliding performance calculations based on throughput and data volume. This can be combined with environment scan to determine the amount of data within the source system, making the process more accurate. Additionally, a visual representation of performance over the lifetime of a migration is available. | |
Migration Scheduling |
Migrations can be scheduled within the Web Application. This can be done at specific dates and times, or migrations can be chained together so that one proceeds only when the previous migration completes. | |
Migration Summary |
When a migration has completed, an easy to read summary is available within the Web Application. | |
User Batching |
When on the users tab within the Web Application you can select a group of users to create a user batch. This will create another migration configuration, based on the currently selected configuration, but including only the selected users. This easily lets you breakdown migrations into manageable chunks. | |
User Administration |
Allows multiple migration engineers to administer CloudMigrator, with audit logs for all actions. | |
In-Product Support |
Access the CloudM support team directly from within the user interface via built-in chat. | |
Custom Storage Location |
Choose a custom location to store migration data. This is usually not required as long as sufficient disk space is provided. | |
GroupWise Setup Tools |
Custom setup tools for GroupWise are available only with the desktop application. These are often not required as this can be achieved using other tools. It is also possible to perform the small amount of setup required using the Desktop Application and then switch to the Web Application. | |
Command Line Usage |
Start and run CloudM Migrate from the command line. This feature has been superseded with the addition of scheduled migrations in the Web Application. |
