Google Chat - Restoration for Full and Item Restoration 

A new Backup release now allows users to Backup Google Chats. These are direct chats and will include 1-1 conversations as well as conversations with multiple members. Refer to the Back up of Google Chat KB for items that are included and excluded.

Full Restoration 

In Scope

• We cannot handle multiple users for chat restore to a single google drive, however we can offer a download option
• We will not be restoring multiple users for chat to the multiple users own drives
• Restore to an alternative single google user drive
• Users = Selection of a single user for download and restore to a google drive
• Users = Selection of multiple selection of users for download only
• Org unit = Multiple users within the org unit - Download option only
• Smart team = Multiple users within the org Smart team - Download option only
• All users = Multiple users - Download option only
• Deleted users  = only single users can be selected - Download and restore to google drive
• Attachments ONLY will be available for drive restoration
• Attachments for download will show as text in the download file
• Links and images will display as text in the download file
• HTML file only
• An email will be generated to the user once the HTML file is available to access - the link will expire in 14 days
• Ability to search and filter in the HTML file
• Ability to use the browser print option HTML file search results to export to PDF or to a printer

Out of scope: 

• Users = Ability to restore to multiple destinations for chat for the google drive option
• Users = Ability to restore to a single destination for google drive for multiple users
• Org unit = Multiple users within the org unit - Restore to a google drive
• Smart team = Multiple users within the org Smart team - Restore to a google drive
• All users = Multiple users - Restore to a google drive
• Shared Drives = Not relevant to Chat
• Export to PDF using the PDF function
• Custom Emoji's

To fully restore a chat follow these steps:

Go to Backup > Full Restoration

On selection of Chat you will be given x 2 options:

Restore to Google Drive OR

Download chats 

HTML file search function once downloaded.

Can search on the following:

Keyword search - can search by keywords within the chat

Filter by start date or end date - can search for chats between a certain date

Filter by Chat Member - can search by specific chat member or members

Item Restoration

• Allow the option for download and restore to a drive
• Attachments ONLY will be available for drive restoration
• Attachments for download will show as text in the download file
• Links and images will display as text in the download file
• Once the user has been selected the chats will be displayed
• You can select the relevant chats by item if required
• There will be a search option to filter the results
• An email will be generated to the user once the HTML file is available to access - the link will expire in 14 days
• Restoration to a drive will display the files ready for download
• Custom Emoji's are NOT available for restoration

To perform an Item Restoration for a chat follow these steps:

Go to Backup > Item Restoration
 

Select the user you wish to select for item restoration

Select restore

It will confirm that the user will not have the chats restored to their profile, it will be restored to the google drive that has been selected. Alternatively you can select download as an option. 

Select download of chats
 

Select download, then Yes, download data. This will create an email with a link or you can download from the restoration status page.

Following a full or item restoration you will automatically be taken to the Restoration Status page.

Successful chat restoration

Select Download chat - this will download into your local downloads

Successful chat restoration  - Download link expires after 14 days

Download the chat from windows explorer, then click on the file which will open in HTML where you can do further filtering.

Where the file has been restored to a google drive, you need to download the file and then open in HTML via windows explorer.
