Migrating Microsoft 365 Teams to Google Workspace Groups

This article provides instructions on configuring a migration batch for migrating Microsoft 365 Teams to Google Groups. The setup process outlined here focuses on migrating mail and conversations.

Before proceeding, ensure you have completed the steps in the Microsoft 365 to Google Workspace Migration Guide to set up your migration project and added your Microsoft 365 Team migration batch.

It is important to note that conversations from the posts tab within each channel will be migrated as mail items to the destination Google Group.

Adding Items to Migrate

When adding items to migrate Microsoft 365 groups to corresponding accounts at the destination, follow the format below:

  • Export Type: Microsoft 365 Team
  • Export Name: Source Team mailnickname
  • Import Type: Group
  • Import Name: Destination group email address
  • Given Name: Destination group display name
  • Family Name: Not required
  • Documents Path: Not required
  • Documents Destination Path: Not required

For each Microsoft 365 Team entry, ensure mail and conversations options are selected. Make sure the 'Migrate' option is enabled for all users included in the migration.

General Settings

In the General Settings section, ensure all domain mappings are configured correctly to facilitate replacing the source domain with the destination domain during the migration.

You can also apply date range filters for various data types to migrate information within a specific timeframe. Specify the date ranges you wish to include.

Source Settings

For a standard Microsoft 365 Team to Google group migration, it is recommended to keep most of the source settings at their default values. However, you will need to adjust the below setting.

  • Microsoft Teams/Groups -> Export chat message type: Set this to "Email" to ensure the conversations are migrated to the destination group mailbox.

Destination Settings

For this migration type, it is generally recommended to keep the destination settings as their default values, however depending on your migration scenario, you may want to modify settings outlined in the below article.

Advanced Settings

For a straightforward Microsoft 365 group to Microsoft 365 group migration, most advanced settings can remain at their default values. However, consider the following:

  • Address Replacement: It is highly recommended to upload an address replacement CSV that maps source users, aliases and groups to the destination. For more information, please refer to the Address Replacements article.

Migration Process

The migration process will vary depending on your project's specific approach. Generally, it is advisable to start with a bulk migration and perform delta migrations closer to the final migration cutover date.
