Handling Long File and Folder Paths During SharePoint Migrations
When migrating to Microsoft SharePoint, it's crucial to be aware of the platform's limitations regarding file and folder path lengths.
SharePoint Path Length Limitation
- Microsoft SharePoint has a 400-character limit for the total length of file and folder paths.
- Any path exceeding this 400-character limit will fail to migrate.
- For detailed information on SharePoint limits, refer to the official Microsoft documentation here.
How CloudM Migrate Handles Long Paths
By default, CloudM Migrate attempts to mitigate this issue:
- CloudM Migrate will automatically attempt to truncate folder and file names that exceed the 400-character SharePoint limitation.
- This truncation aims to bring the path length within the acceptable limit, allowing for successful migration.
Remediation for Paths Exceeding Limits
Despite the automatic truncation, some paths may still exceed the limit or cause issues. To ensure a successful migration for these items:
- Pre-migration Remediation: Any file or folder paths that remain over 400 characters after CloudM Migrate's default truncation will fail.
- Manual Adjustment Required: To successfully migrate these items, their paths must be manually changed at the source to fit within the 400-character limitation before the migration
